I didn’t have a whale watching tour today, so I road tripped it up to B-ham to drop off brochures at a few hotels and run a few errands in The City of Subdued Excitement. Nice day on the bay. One sailboat out there enjoying the light breeze and sunshine.

Seattle Times ran this excellent article today about a recent man overboard situation in the Puget Sound. The video is intense.

Some key take aways:

• You can survive 45 minutes in cold water!
• Life jackets work well when you wear them.
• I’m a huge fan of Life Slings and practicing how to use them.
• Retrieving a MOB at the stern in heavy seas is dangerous, but sometimes it’s your best or only option.

Kudos to the skipper, crew, and everyone involved for achieving the best possible outcome.

I’ve been playing around with a few AI apps. I like Claude. I used another one to draw this image. Naturally, I asked for a “new-age sailboat with killer whales in space.” Not bad, I guess. I would’ve preferred a monohull.
